Young voices brighten Remembrance Day

Cookshire Elementary School served as a nearly 50-member choir for Remembrance Day in Cookshire on Monday, November 11, becoming the highlight of an otherwise somber, grey, and rainy day.
Emcee Bob Halsall gave the students a special thank you as the sacrifices of veterans were remembered.

“You are our future,” he said in English to the students after their performance. “You are the ones that are showing us, the way you just sang. You are our future leaders. And we thank you for doing this! We’re really glad you participated with us.”

Their participation added to the 30 or so other people attending the Cookshire ceremony, including service men and women, members of the Legion and Army, Navy, Air Force Vets, minister of the Sawyerville Baptist Church, federal and provincial representatives, the mayor of Cookshire-Eaton, and others.

The Cookshire commemoration was held in French and English and followed six other Remembrance ceremonies in the Upper Saint Francis region. The final one in Island Brook later that afternoon completed the tour for vets, dignitaries, and organizers.

Saturday in Weedon, Scotstown, and Bury, and Sunday in East Angus, participants enjoyed rarer Remembrance sunshine. In Cookshire, the rain paused just long enough for activities to take place—and for the special light brought by youth to shine through.
