TOP 5

Rachel Garber

World Clean-up Day is past, and in its wake is the second edition of Greenpeace’s brand audits to see who the Top 5 plastic polluters are in Canada.

Our Top 5 were, in this order:

  1. Nestlé, the world’s largest food company and producer of 1.7 million tonnes of plastic every year.
  2. Tim Hortons, one of Canada’s most iconic plastic polluters.
  3. Starbucks, making its debut in the Top 5 list this year.
  4. McDonald’s, a repeat offender.
  5. The Coca-Cola Company, also among the Top 5 offenders worldwide.
Each year, these brands churn out billions of single-use plastic packages: coffee cups and lids, pop/water bottles, bottle caps, chip bags and candy bar wrappers. They produced a whopping 46% of the garbage assessed.

The only real solution, Greenpeace suggests, is to find alternatives to single-use packaging. For a petition asking these corporations to do this, visit www.greenpeace.org/canada/.

And the AFEAS has just such a rendez-vous or “meet up” place in its meeting room located in the lower floor of the Cookshire-Eaton Town Hall.
